Block printing is a traditional art form native to Rajasthan, India. Artisans hand carve a wood block with patterns inspired by local flora and fauna, dip it into dye, and then carefully stamp the fabric, creating beautiful patterns. We have improved the process for our block print artisans by reducing water use, using unbleached cotton, and natural and non-toxic dyes.
Artisans in urban northwest India sew upcycled denim, sari fabrics, and cotton to create our beautifully repurposed and stylish accessories. The fabric is sourced from cloth collectors’ remnants and discards, checked for defects, washed and prepped for a new life. Men take the bulk of the machine stitching work; women work on finishing, traditional kantha embroidery, and hand stitching. Many fabrics created and embellished by other artisans that require complex stitching are sent to this community for fine finishing details.
Block Print Artisans
Our block print artisan partners live in scattered rural villages that are challenged by poverty and lack of infrastructure in their isolated communities. There are few opportunities for jobs in this desert region, where the climate is too dry for agriculture. Most artisans live in mud huts and some do not have electricity. We partner with an organization that focuses on economic, social and environmental upliftment for these communities and provides development solutions such solar power, education, and health care.
Our stitching artisan partners come from a low-income community. Steady, reliable, fair income, and skills training and development have enhanced their positions economically and socially. Many of the artisans’ children are in school, and the families can now attain higher education.
