Sustainability at Matr Boomie

DISCOVERING A KINDER, BETTER WAY

To Matr Boomie, a sustainable product is made up of a holistic combination of factors that consider the impact along the entire lifestyle from production through reuse or disposal. We have invested in sustainable development projects to ensure that clean production practices conserve resources while also preserving the environment. We see sustainability as a way of life, not an end goal. Because of this, we strive to use reusable packaging options wherever possible and create products that are largely made from compostable or recycled materials and can be disassembled to offer an alternative from traditional disposal. We hope the end of one product’s life completes a loop, allowing for the beginning of a new natural or industrial cycle.

Creating Solutions through Design

water

The Problem

80% of sewage in India is untreated and flows directly into rivers. The number of polluted rivers in India has more than doubled over the years. Many communities are dry from using excess groundwater for their needs.

Our Impact

We have installed water filtration systems for the block printing community with the capacity to filter 2,000 liters of water each hour. This saves 1 million gallons of water annual and removes toxins from discharge.

wooden kitchen spoons

deforestation

The Problem

46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Our Impact

All of our wood products are made from dead trees and planned, responsible deforestation.

leather/bone

The Problem

Leather and bone production is often inhumane and conventional leather tanning uses hazardous chemicals.

Our Impact

We source all bone and leather materials from naturally deceased animals and use vegetable tanning processes.

carbon footprint

The Problem

Air shipping releases 30 times more CO2 than shipping by sea.

Our Impact

As an international product distribution company, shipping impacts are inevitable. However, we want to keep air shipping to a minimum which is why we generally favor shipping via freight to reduce our carbon footprint.

plastic

The Problem

Plastics don’t decompose and end up filling up in cities, oceans waterways and contribute to health problems for humans and animals.

Our Impact

In an effort to eliminate plastic poly bags, we developed bags made from upcycled saris to package our products. These bags reduce the use of plastic bags but also makes use of scrap fabric that would otherwise go to landfills. These bags also provide incomes to our artisan partners who stitch the bags.

materials matter.

45%of our items are primarily compostable* at the end of their life cycle

44%of our products are made from preferred materials*

preferred materials

Materials that are sourced in a socially environmentally responsible manner, including managing resource supplies, protecting human health, animal rights and not polluting the ecosystem.

These can include:

Compostable Materials

A form of degradation that goes back to nature. The ingredients of the product are able to dissolve back to natural ingredients of the earth.

Dyes + Components

We prefer use of natural dyes and when that is not possible in production, we ensure all synthetic dyes are non-toxic and AZO-free
